Jeffrey's Honduras Report - Hi Gang, its about time that I send you some news. After many delays with the repair of my wing in Florida, (wouldn't you know it, but the day that I sent my wing the repair person went on holidays for two weeks) then there were the inevitable delays and expences to ship back to Honduras. After much patience I finally got my wing when the weather turned foul for another ten days. I was going crazy but used much of my free time exploring and looking for sites to fly.

This weekend there was a break in the weather and I had three flights within ten minutes drive from my home on slopes overlooking Tegucigalpa. First flight was late on Saturday after working and as planned was a sled ride to check out the site. On Sunday morning I flew early before conditions were strong and had a similar flight. The highlite being the children who came out to check out what was for them quite a spectacle. The landing zone is a spot were many local kids fly homade kites and there reaction to seeing me arrive from alto montania was pretty wild. My second flight on Sunday was in much stronger conditions, in a mixture of strong ridge lift and winds in which I was motionless over the ground without speedbar and punchy thermals in spite of the high winds. Flew for an hour using big ears and speed bar to keep from gettting picked up higher into even stronger wind without a known landing field.

Today when I told my co- workers were I had flown I was quickly warned that it is a very dangerous place for "gringos" and that I was lucky that I wasn't mugged or worse upon landing. One of whom told me that I am not safe to go there even if I was carrying a gun. What they don't realize is that whenever I land I am surrounded and feel very protected by the pressence of masses of beautiful curious children and often many equally curious adults and I am never alone.

The other news is that I have just hired a person for the company from Costa Rica who has experience flying, not that it had any influence in my decision. He may be the only other person in Honduras at the moment with flying in mind and I happen to be in a position to offer him a job! There must be more to life than meets the eye. I have been checking the site of the day regularly and keeping up to date on your flights - Regards, Jeffrey

Grouse Report - I flew to Edmonton at 7:45 pm and the pilot took off at YVR and turned right and climbed straight over Grouse, just above the CYA in a shallow climb. Good idea to maintain a vigilent eye when free-flying Grouse. I didn't see any gliders flying at that time. The flight took us east of Pemberton and over the forest fire at Lilloette.

Woodside Report - another windy but awesome day, only got two student flights prior to the winds building but we had a good flight at 5:30 pm, with only Andy, Jim and Gary launching PGs with Charles M, Leonardo and Jon O on their HGs. Everyone topped out at 1100 meters in ridge lift with the odd thermal. As I saw Andy head towards Agassiz, I followed and pointed towards Bridal but it was not going to happen because the thermals were too windswept so I flew to Agassiz High School, overflying it and then deciding to land with Andy at the Rec Center. Smooth landings. The HGers chose to land at Eagle Ranch due to turbulence at the HG LZ, strong sheer layers at 500 feet - Jim

Bridal Report - also windy at Bridal, but smoothed out up at Upper Launch. When I reached the Agassiz area I saw Bob F heading out as the lift was dying out.

Woodside Report - it was an awesome day at Woodside!

Student flights in the AM, with lots of airtime and a bit of thermalling. As it got stronger, I flew a tandem and because it looked windy on Harrsion Bay, I went XC towards Agassiz. After I crossed the Fraser River on the way to the Rosedale Bridge, we hit a solid + 2 m/s (400 ft/min) thermal that took us back to 1000 meters and on towards the bridge. I contemplated landing at the Bridal LZ, but it was shaded over there and the lift was weak so we headed in to the Agassiz High School field.

Norm and Alex flew towards Agassiz Mountain getting high there but had to buck the head wind on the way out landing at the Esso at the Harrison turnoff. They reported +6 m/s climbs on the face of Agassiz Mountain.

The last flight of the day around 6:00 pm, was another tandem for me, and it was glassing off and if you could get off launch cleanly you were rewarded with a smooth lifty flight all the way to the LZ. Kirril was stuck at 1000 meters for the entire flight pulling "big ears" over the River to descend into Eagle Ranch just before dusk.

New student Neil had a great two flights thermalling on both flights getting above launch. Then it started to get windy so we headed to Agassiz to kite until 7:00 pm when we were rewarded with a sweet soaring flight.

The wind started picking up on my 3rd flight, everyone needed full speedbar to get over the ridge into the Eagle Ranch LZ (we all made it!). The last flight of the day was even ridge soarable, though not for too long. Woodside was a great place to be today! - Martina

Woodside Report - we had four students flying all day with only a short non-flyable window due to surface winds, four flights in varying conditions. Andy skyed Norm out again, so Norm had to go out on the Zoom to try and redeem himself and had a great flight!

We had an un-named pilot flying a Red/Black Trango doing well until he snagged a treetop 200 meters north of launch starting a rescue party. By 8:00 pm everything was down out to the 150 foot tree, thanks to a great group including Meilan who bravely climbed the tree to extract the wing. No damage other than a few lines frayed.

Woodside Report - a good day at Woodside for advanced pilots! We hd a few "ratty" sled-rides for students until 1:30 pm when it got strong.

I flew a couple of tandems in leeside lift that was making it hard to keep pressure in the wing at times especially north of launch. Peter G found a boomer near the cliff bowl that took him to 2500 meters. Mark T and Randy found the same thermal on their Handgliders (kingposted) and took off for Cheam, arriving there at 5000 feet! On my last flight I took Heidi tandem over the back towards Agassiz and landed near the Kentwood Pub, and saw Mark and Randy landing at Harvest Market LZ.

Apparently this last call to fly over to Agassiz was the right one. Stocks in Alcan rose sharply yesterday due to the "Downtube Derby" in the Woodside HG Landing field. Strong winds and rotor combined with so-so approaches caused many crushed downtubes. We saw one red HGer landing in the field and then it turned white as it was returned to the upright position! I am glad I landed in smooth conditions past Cemetary Hill!

After we sent the students home, Norm drove and Kirill, Robin and I flew the most beautiful glass-off flight getting above 1000 meters and landing just before dusk!

Woodside Dust Devil Report - it was clear from all indications that we weren't going to fly Woodside or Bridal after we saw the NE winds on the ground at Eagle Ranch and heard Jack report 25 kms/hr from the NE at Bridal Launch.

So we were kiting instead at Eagle Ranch. Jack, Andy, Thomm and a few students were out practising kiting in the moderately strong conditions. The students did well and were out of their gear and sitting in the shade when we saw a dusty break off in Duncan's field to the NE of us. It was large and full of dust and leaves and it was gone on 20 seconds . . . or so we thought! It must have restarted and was headed right for Andy in the middle of the field, we were screaming at him to sit on the wing but he could hear us because of the roar of the dusty. Leaves, branches and dust were flying as he jumped on his wing just in time. Jack was already sitting on his wing. Then we saw Thomm, who was directly in line of the dusty near the training hill sorting his lines, get the wing ripped out of his hands (not yet clipped in) and the wing was launched up about 10 meters and heading for the trees that surround the house. Yikes! The wing was inflated and dancing in the dusty and it hit the trees going about 20 km/hr. Snap, crack bang and there it hung. We had to get the ladder and chainsaw and cut a few limbs to extract the wing. Post mortem - 8 small tears and one V-rib torn. The good news was that no one was injured.

Safety tips for kiting - always wear a helmet, good hiking boots and long pants. Gloves are recommended.

Yesterday had the makings of a "dusty day". Leeside conditions, huge lapse rates, overdeveloping skies and hot!

Hope Report - we drove down leaving Lumby at 4:00 am, to arrive for a briefing at Hope Airport for Flight Fest Days.

The plan was to get helicoptered up to Hope Mountain, not flown since a group (including Vincene Muller) of HGers did it in 1978 or so! Bob F, Norm, Colleen and I were the chosen group, organized by Barry M.

Unfortunately, the winds and rain cause us to cancel the event and as we were leaving to drive to Eagle Ranch we were met with monsoon rains. Just like paragliding, if you plan an event . . . Mother Nature will get you!

Woodside Report - we reassembled at Woodside and attemted to fly but it was way too windy so everyone headed to the Sasquatch Inn for cheap burger night. We stayed at the Ranch and worked. Later at 6:30 pm Colleen drove me up for a nice soaring flight getting to 1000 meters at the Towers. 45 minutes in smooth lifty air, with some cloudsuck at 1000 meters. Colleen was heading to Agassiz for milk, so I headed over the back for more altitude to do some maneuvers on the Bandit we recently traded in. Nice wing for stunts! After I packed up it started to rain. The balance of the week looks good thru to Friday!

NATS Report - an exciting last day of the PG Nationals! Vernon Mountain was the call and it started out with wind dummies sinking out early, so we waitied til the last 15 minutes again. Most got out of the bailout sector, but it was tough work getting any distance, most of the field landed near the Lumby Ridge turnpoint which is only 12 kms. Robin had the most entertaining landing, but it could have gone badly as I suspect he had a "Guardian Angel" riding on his shoulder.

Note the parking lot in front and the powerlines behind. Robin landed on the roof of the Chicken Run/Pagoda Inn Building.

This the field to the west, but Robin got blown back over it in rough air.

Cooper's Report - we flew early and all sunk out due to crappy conditions, then several pilots went back to relaunch and the conditions improved dramatically.

Colleen flew the course (a triangle of 27.1 kms between Cooper's Launch, Lumby Ridge and Saddle) but missed crossing the virtual goal line due to confusion on it's location but she still got 5th place for the day! I had a decent flight but apparently 2000 meters was not high enough due to sink between the gulley and Lumby Ridge (-4.5 m/s consistently) and I got serious ground suck. The 4 pilots that made goal had more patience, and left at 3100 meters and made it.

It is fun flying and very entertaining watching the front runners and their strategies. Patience makes all the difference in this valley!

Nats Report - Cooper's was the call for the day and we were up early for an 11:00 am pilot meeting. But the task committee took over an hour to decide the task and we saw the conditions become stable before the launch window opened.

Alan D took off to wind-dummy for us and climbed to 3300 meters quickly. A few comp pilots launched right after the window opened and sunk out for a quick retrieve to come back up to relaunch. There was only 15 minutes left for 25 pilots to launch and I decided to launch from the back and I got drilled to below launch and I spent 10 minutes thermalling with Jim Orava and we were slowly climbing when I got pushed into sink and had to land in the bomb-out field. Because the conditions deteriorated so quickly, the launch window was extended an additional 10 minutes to get everyone off. Keith and I paid for early launch strategies, as we were on the ground before conditions allowed pilots to stay up.

Slowly everyone started climbing out and were soon on the way to start the task: Cooper's to Lumby Ridge, back to Coopers, then on to Camels Hump, Rawlins Cliffs, then on to Cherryville goal field (42 kms).

A pilot was forced to land in the forest behind launch but was okay. While Rob S was watching the pilot land and radioing coordinates, he took a collapse that cravatted and he was spiralling in so he had to throw the reserve! He was okay except for a bruised knee and torn reserve.

As I was on the ground I followed Colleen's progress as she made her way to Camel's Hump where she was forced to land in a farmer's field near Rawlin's Cliffs. She reported getting to 3200 meters at Lumby Ridge, others were at the same height over Cooper's.

Seven pilots were in goal officially with all turnpoints. Mike Spencer was on a big high as he crossed the goal line.

Start Gaggle

Here is Colleen themalling up at the second turnpoint before heading to Saddle, where she scratched up for 100 meters off the deck to go on to 25 kms total before landing at the Mill!

This is a view of the Saddle on my glide over, as I left at 2000 meters. Robin, Rob and I scratched over the Saddle for 20 minutes to get back to cloudbase.

This is the famous Rawlins Cliffs on my way there, I was able to scratch over the brown bump mid picture for a few turns but wasn't going to make it, in fact I got pushed over the forest and nearly ended up in the trees. My distance was 18.7 kms.

Robin came over to the cliffs and ended up in the same low spot over the bump but got his thermal to take him up and over the cliffs and then on another 10 kms toward goal where he landed high on a plateau where we retrieved him.

Over 10 pilots made goal, many more made it past half-way and some had technical GPS problems but it was great flying today - Jim.

Vernon Mtn. Report - we drove up from Eagle Ranch at 9:15 am, arriving at Vernon Mtn. Launch just as the comp window opened and we quickly joined into the fray. There was 15 minutes left during the start window and only a few had launched, sidehill landed and hiked back up. Kudos to Mark Dowsett who launched 8 minutes before the window closed, sunk out, landed and hiked back to relaunch and made goal! Colleen showed the boys how to thermal out of the start cyclinder and made it to Lumby. I avoided the trees but alas landed at 3.8 kms in the Lavington Valley after missing a few rough thermals.

Bridal Report - interesting air at Bridal! I launched the Keara around 4:30 pm, spent a few minutes in the bowl in rough air. Went to the slide west of the bowl and got up to Archibald quickly, and straight along the Saddle towards Upper Launch (where Nicole was attempting to top-land). I made one pass observing the strong cycles (25-30 kph) and headed west towards Gloria. Not enjoyable air at all, even in the cores. Others were overheard complaining about rough conditions too.

I flew back towards Lower Launch and headed out in the Valley towards Agassiz. No GPS but I was at 900 meters over the garbage dump near Klaus' house and could have made the Agassiz High School easily (downwind drifting). But my car was at Bridal and I was committed to top land to drive Jan U's truck down, so I flew back towards Lower Launch arriving there quite low. A few passes got me up for an approach and I nailed it first time at 5:45 pm. Good lift out front but still choppy. Pilots flew until 8:30 pm and it smoothed out later according to Derek K - Jim

Woodside Report - I arrived at Eagle Ranch around 4:15 pm after a long day in Toronto, itching for a flight. I saw Jim T on his new Tetra just above launch but not going up and I had the Suburban in the shop to prepare it for the Nationals, so I was without a ride up. Solution: Head to Bridal like everyone else that has no 4x4!

Bridal Report - when I arrived there were 10 gliders already high above launch and Ihor was kind enough to wait a few minutes for me. As I arrived Barry was just taking off and Bob was preparing to launch and old face from the past, Armin Frei, was up top with Dave Stanek getting ready to fly. Armin used to fly here 9 years ago before moving to Switzerland (he had a great flight).

I launched after Bob and climbed quickly above launch but no good lift in the bowl so I heded west to the next gulley and climbed smoothly to the top of Archibald, but there were some shaky moments when the south flow aloft blew the thermals apart and spit me out! I moved west along the Saddle, towards Upper Launch and watch Nicole land with Rob S circling below and S turned my way straight in to approach to top land.

I didn't wait around too long in case the south wind started blowing over the back at launch and relaunched into a nice climb. Pilots were going up way out front in the valley above Upper Launch height, another pilot was high above Cheam in the lee, apparently not having any problems.

I flew down and top landed (Alan said it was a crash!). Okay, it wasn't elegant but I landed after 2 passes so I could drive Ihor's truck down. After Rob and Alan landed I relaunched because Brad wanted someone to fly over the Rotary Meeting at Minter Garden's so I obliged. Looks like Bridal will be on again Thursday! - Jim
