Woodside Report - we were towing students all afternoon in moderate winds until 3:00 pm. The higher winds kicked in and we were kiting for a few hours. Nice CU on Woodside most of the day, pity we can't drive up there.

Tiger Mtn WA Report - Ian J. and I went to Tiger Mtn as more NW wind was forecast. Strong cycles on launch but the local tandems were doing ok so launched into sweet lift. Went over to the North ridge but bumpy so stayed around the Kingdome instead. Lots of wind and later on it got stronger on launch, so later-arriving pilots had to wait it out. When it mellowed out the rest of the pilots launched and I top-landed for a break, then relaunched just as it got strong again. Flew around some more with the locals until it got really strong and blown out on launch, then landed after about 3 hours total airtime -Nicole

Tiger Mountain Report - Nicole and Robin headed to Tiger and had two hours of airtime with a top-landing for lunch. Nicole tried to run us off the I-5 on the way home :-)

Kaslo Report - last flight report for August from Derek K, Carl D and Annelies B. They launched at 11:50 am from Mt Buchanan and had a nice flight landing at 1:00 pm on the beach at Kaslo. The RCMOP were there to investigate reports that pilots were on the mountain despite the ban on travel, but were satisfied after hearing that they had left the mountain before noon. Proof that we can't go against the ban until it is lifted September 15.

Mara Report - Jack called to say he was on the mountain and doing a last legal flight there before noon, no reports on enforcement action at Mara yet.

On the way down we received two calls from Robin and Alan to say the Ministry of Forests had closed Woodside Access Road as well as Bridal. This closure is until further notice so we are abiding by their restrictions. Pray for rain.

Mara Report - I flew a tandem with Emil Segeren's daughter Jennay (9 years old) early in the day and we had a nice buoyant flight flying over her Grandma's house and landing on the beach. Then up for an XC flight. I launched first and Annelies hurried off launch to follow me as ths clouds rolled in and shut down our thermals. Carl launched after us for another manuevers flight. I scratched for 30 minutes and it never got sunny so I was forced to land at the campground. Frank drove down and picked Annelies, Carl and I up and took us back up to launch as Colleen and Derek were on their way to Enderby. The plan was for all of us to fly as far as possible because Carl was doing another SAT flight and he would chase us down range in Derek's truck. Frank also flew for his first XC attempt. I launched after everyone (into the shade yet again) and scratched all the way to the Enderby cliffs where I got up high enough to pass Annelies. Frank was already on the ground at Enderby for his first successful XC flight. Colleen was also in Enderby and Derek was already at Armstrong!

I was talking to Colleen who was already scoping out restaurants and bars for dinner (after hitting 2990 meters over Enderby cliffs) and I arrived over Enderby with 2500 feet to burn off . . . so why not SAT in?? I entered the SAT after one turn and held it for 10 revolutions over the town but the wind was blowing me back so I landed on the north side of town near the high school. Derek landed in the same gust front using B line stalls to get down fast through the turbulence. Derek's flight lasted 3:30 to my 1:30. What a great day - Jim

Fraser Valley Report - a local BC Forestry person has told us that they are closing all mountain access roads to Cultus Lake, Harrison Lake and other park sites due to the fire hazard. Woodside may be affected too. Stay tuned for more details.

Mara Report - the clinic was over but I talked Annelies into coming tandem with me as I tested the Tucan for SAT'ing. We had a failed SAT first, a great second SAT into a SAT Back, then one last SAT before heading for the beach. She screamed like a banshee all the way through the SATs. Carl has his SATs dialed in now too. Everyone else had fun flights.

Annelies wrote

The launch was sweet and the landing too, but in between I did turn blue.

Revelstoke Report - we flew a few days at Sale Mountain in smoky conditions while there were fires on all four quadrants. We called Flight Service and determined that we were clear of no-fly zones and we flew a few sledders. I took Drew (Derek's son) for a tandem and we did B stalls and big wing-overs and he loved the flight after much trepidation. My last flight before we left was a cloud sucky flight where I was getting lifted faster than a B stall could counter and it took an hour to get on the ground. Due to the smoke and fires locally we decided to move to Mara Lake.

Woodside Report - flyable until 3:00 when it got windy, then we waited until 6:30 to go back up to launch. We installed a tarp to reduce glider damage as a temporary measure and then Derek, Bob F, Barry and I flew. Bob had the longest flight and I waited until 7:30 to launch and the glass-off occurred at about that time. I was able to soar above launch and it got so strong that it was impossible to get in safely to top-land because it was so gusty. I stayed 200 meters above launch for some time waiting for the wind to subside but it never slowed down, and as it was getting dark I had to fly out to land. Full bar on the Sport M yielded 8-10 km/hr ground speeds and super lifty over the Fraser River and Eagle Ranch where I soared for a while before touching down by "Stonehenge" (the barbeque pit).

Bridal Report - Derek and Alan soared for a few hours before it got windy, later I heard Alex and Ian J had a nice flight too.

Bev's Mara Report - OUCH! I fell off Mara Launch and tumbled thru the stumps. Nicole helped me out and I am not sure what happened, but it cost me $15 to get a ride down the mountain from a certain local instructor :-( - Bev

Woodside Report - a fabulous day we will be talking about for years!

Students were flying all day from 9:30 am, and around 1:00 pm the lift became amazingly smooth and large thermals were everywhere taking the students to 1000 meters AGL for 2+ hours (some had to land because they made themselves dizzy).

TJ from WA State was "top of the stack" for hours and only Ian J was above him on his new Tetra. Experienced pilots Robin S, Kelly, Bruce McG and Brent P flew over the back and headed to points east. Robin landed at Ruby Creek for his longest Fraser Valley XC, Bruce at Seabird Island (the field with the electric fence) and the rest along Harrison Road.

Can Am Report - Rob Samplonious is crowned the overall PG winner of a crowd of 28 pilots. Jack C reported strong lift requiring Big Ears all the way to the ground!

Pembie Report - Great time at Pembie for a few days. A couple days ago flew to Hurley and back. Then yesterday Alex, Craig, Jill (visiting Kiwis), and I decided to do a vol bivuac. Packed up the sleeping bags and some food, and launched into really scratchy conditions and finally made it to Copper Mtn (?) near Hurley. Top-landed (2100m) and stayed the night, camping out under the stars. The next morning we decided to fly down before it got blown out and glided back down the valley where we got a ride. Bridal Report - quite a few pilots experiencing great lift all the way up to Mt. Cheam. Unfortunately Darren H experienced a collapse high over the ridge at Cheam and his wing cravatted and he was forced to throw his reserve. He landed safely on the mountain and had to stay overnight because it got dark before he could hike very far (flight suit and glider saved him from the insects). Darren was at Alan's by 9:30 am after hiking to a road.

Search and Rescue efforts were hampered by some ham operators illegally using 146.415 as an "echo link" digital repeater system. If you over hear other radio operators on 146.415 using repeater like tones and morse identifiers, inform them that their activity is illegal and keep stepping on their signals to force them to vacate the frequency. If you can identify the call signs, get it to Klaus Waldhor at 604-794-3208 and he will contact Industry Canada.

Lumby Report - Bev reports great Lumby flying and "yucky" Mara flying, even Norm couldn't stay up. She is enjoying her new Presta and climbed to 6000' yet again in a few turns impressing some locals.

Golden Report - flew 'til who knows when (but headlamps were manditory!). At 4000 meters at 9:00 pm, doing "touch and goes" on the Mount 7 ridges, lots of spiralling down. Can't wipe the grin off my face even this morning - Mark F

Woodside Report - it was a good flying day until 4:00 pm when the thunderstorms hit! No one out and no one on 146.415 mhz at Bridal either.

Bev's Golden Report - Bev reported a lively flight on her new Presta, something about needing to use more brakes in the thermals, lots of collapses during the flight but she reports good flare authority as she landed on her feet (while Norm butt-skidded in much to Bev's delight!).
Martina's Japan Report - Hi again! Sunday was an awesome day, "Little Torrey Pines" did not disappoint! I flew for about 45 minutes, amazing ridge soaring right on the Sea of Japan. The launch was interesting: bring up your wing, kite it while walking sideways, then run up a small incline and then basically jump off the cliff. Once in the air, the sea breeze was sure welcome, I think it hit 30 degrees that day, not including the humidity! I think I got too much sun that day, Seiji pointed at me and said, "overheat!" The guys made me feel right at home, when the wind got too light one of them grabbed a tandem wing and took a solo flight on it, until his wingtip caught a tree branch and he made an unplanned early sidehill landing!

I hope to get some mountain flying in soon, but a lot of the sites are closed in the summer due to the lz's being used as rice paddies! I guess I'll just have to make do with the beach for now . . . Talk to you soon, Martina

Woodside Report - they thought we were crazy to expect to fly today, but patience prevailed.

The day started with Ian J buzzing us at 8:00 am on his "Acme Paramotor", but I could not join him because I had no pre-mix fuel, but maybe next weekend.

The students all went up the mountain early and we sat for a while waiting for the wind to come upslope, and then it started to rain. We packed up and drove down and they went for a sandwich and on their return the skies opened up and we flew until 7:30 pm. Ian G, Darren, TJ and Lou all had three flights (their first solos ever) while Rick and the other experienced fliers flew too! It was a glorious day with light winds and no storms as forecast. Chris K brought up his video camera to record his friend's tandems and recorded all the launch action, it will be a valuable teaching tool.

My last tandem took us over to the south knoll for some soaring and I could see Bridal had opened up but I saw no wings in the air.

Invermere Lakeside Report - Nicole called to tell us that the first few pilots (herself included), had good flights into the beach before the gust front hit with pilots scattering all over and landing backwards!

Several first solo flights completed by new students in smooth conditions, but the last student to fly recorded +5.0 m/s thermals which took him very high, very fast! Martina's Japan Report - Hi guys! We have finally settled in Fukuoka, Japan. ("We" being me and my boyfriend Scott, in case you forgot the story!) Typhoon #10 has just passed, so I figured I'd try to get some flying in before monsoon season starts in September. I went to the pg/kitesurfing shop of the only guy who'd written me back (communicating without knowing much Japanese is almost impossible) and turns out he went to Vancouver about 4 years ago! He asked me, since I was from Vancouver was I one of Jim and Colleen's students? Small world. Seiji then threw on a video he made at Woodside and I'm now officially home sick. There were some familiar faces in the video - Jim, Colleen, Aaron, Norm, Brian and Margit. I think he actually has footage of Norm doing a forward launch in almost no wind! (ha ha). We went to check out the amazingly beautiful ridge soaring site on the beach, they like to call it Little Torrey Pines. It was blowing cross, but the forecast for tomorrow is sun, and I'm heading out there in the morning. Can't wait to shake the international dust off my wing! Hopefully I'll have a flight report for you tomorrow, and that the offerings I made to the wind gods at the shrines have paid off. I miss you guys! Say hi to everyone for me, and I'll write again soon - Love Martina

Woodside Report - we were supposed to fly Deroche with new students Bob and Rick, but when we arrived at the LZ it was blowing too hard for experts let alone students. So we headed back to Woodside. When we finally got to launch it was coming in about 15-20 kms/hr with small lulls between cycles. The plan was to show Bob and Rick the escape route over the Fraser River into Agassiz for future reference, but when Bob launched his radio konked and he didn't follow instructions and he ended up in Riverside. Rick never launched because it got too strong and it blew hard right til dark. My flight time was 1:01 waiting for Bob to launch and then guiding him into the landing.

Bridal Report - it was blowing hard all day at Bridal LZ and Derk, Igor and Annellies finally flew around 7:30 pm, Igor top-landed and drove Derek's truck down so Derek could fly. 25-35 minute flights.

Golden Report - Yesterday we decided to have a rest day, since it was very windy and we hadn't had a non-flying day all week, plus we needed to be rested up for Mark's party! So no flying on Friday; a bunch of us went hiking the Mummery Glacier and others spent the day at Cedar lake trying out the rope swing. The party was great as usual, great food and music and lots of people showed up.

Today looked like light conditions with high cirrus. We all launched and scratched a bit, it was hard getting over the peaks so we were all bobbing along just around peak height. There are two forest fires, one is at Harrogate and you fly right over it basically. The other one is HUGE in the Beaverfoot range and from the air looks like a mushroom cloud or a volcano erupting. The smoke is making things hard to see in the air long-range. Some pilots made it to Brisco; I did an out-and-return Parson and back so the retrieve wouldn't be as long :) - Nicole

The remaining days of the "Willi" were called due to forest fires by the organizers as it was deemed unsafe to have pilots flying over forest fires - ed.

THE MT 7 FLYING SITE AT GOLDEN, BC, IS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO FOREST FIRES.

This means ALL flying, INCLUDING sled rides to Nicholson.

The heat is intense, the bush is tinder dry, and there are already forest fires in almost every direction from Golden. So there are fire fighting aircraft working to and from every direction from Golden, and visibility at some altitudes is murky from smoke and haze.

There is one at Harrogate that started Thusrday night and is now over into the Beaverfoot to the east, which alone means helicopters flying over Mt 7 and/or directly down the range. I live down range, and they are flying over my house steady.

There are lightening strikes in the forecast, and new fires could easily start at any time - such as the huge one somewhere behind Field (east of Golden) that was mushrooming while we were flying yesterday afternoon.

The situation is close becoming a Provincial Emergency.

I will post an "All Clear" when we get to that point.

Bridal Upper Report - we drove 8 pilots around the back of Bridal and 5 pilots hiked from the Saddle to meet at Upper Launch. I was forst to launch and was able to fly over launch several times after catching a small theermal off to the left of the scree slope. I flew out to test the air for the students and off they came as we guided them from top and bottom. Bob F had the longest flight with his new vario! After that we drove back up to Lower Launch but it was too blown out for students, so it was off to Woodside. However Bev had a great soaring flight that left her with bruises on her stomach?

Woodside Report - we arrived at launch around 7:00 pm with an old pilot from way back (Rob Pope) and he entertained us with a reverse launch into the trees to the left of launch, no damage to pilot or trees! I was in the air on a tandem and we got the best view of the crash. He relaunched after that and soared for a while. Then Bob and Rick came out to join us. As I flew out to Eagle Ranch I hit some amazing lift from the Fraser River sandbars and we soared for 45 minutes all over the Harrison Mills peninsula, overflying the Kilby Park area, Sandpiper Golf Course, back to Eagle Ranch and we did circuits like that until landing in smooth conditions (although it was bumpy around Harrison Hill) - Jim

Golden Report - Well today was another good-looking day, nice development over both sides of the valley. But the air was the roughest I've flown in a long time; my flight was basically a 3 hour maneouver's course, when I decided I'd had enough and bailed at Brisco. Lots of other pilots reported similar conditions. Most did out and returns as a south wind came up down-range. The haze from the forest fires is very noticeable while flying, until you get above the inversion about 14, 000'. One pilot decided to go over the back, and went to around the Mt. Assiniboine area before landing due to a TCU forming ahead.
