Woodside Report - I arrived at Eagle Ranch to do some work and wait for Ian J, Rob P, Martina and Nicole. Alan and Norm were in the air above launch, but as we arrived at launch they were both on the deck in Riverside (Alan literally on a sandbar at the riverside, cause he went further east following an eagle).

Rob S launched first and was quickly in the Riverside LZ. Then it started to get better and 4 HGers launched in sequence, all getting high. So the race was on, I launched after the hangs on a demo Makalu and had to scratch around below launch until I caught some lift to get me UP.

It was mostly ridge soaring with an occasional turn until about 4:15 pm when it turned on, good lift took me to 1350 meters back at the clearcut, but it was too shaded at Agassiz Mountain to venture east.

I moved back to the front of the mountain and made a few attempts at top-landing but it was too strong, so I went ridge soaring with everyone else, and then when it got light I went straight in and landed to retrieve Robs truck. I was followed in by Glen T, late for dinner, with a sideways approach from the north.

Total pilots: 6 HGers, 10 PGers, lots of airtime, not too rough in the air - Jim

Vancouver Island Report - Dallas was on again, for about 40 minutes, right at sunset. Too bad for the pilots that hung around all day waiting for th 9 k wind to turn into something. I got a nice flight in moderately strong cross wind for 1/2 an hour. It's a nice way to end a day. Still smiling - Brucie McG.

March 24 Woodside Sunny! High 13° 20% POP 290° at 12 knots -2.0°/1000'
(standard lapse rate)
Woodside Report - a bit more challenging until later in the day, except for Barry B who was high above launch for several hours. Later flights allowed for ridge soaring up to 500 feet above launch in smooth air.

March 23 Woodside Sunny! High 13° 30% POP 290° at 12 knots -2.0°/1000'
(standard lapse rate)

Island Gloat Report - Leeside thermalling at Malahat. Malahat was on in a huge way on Sunday. Claudio and I were the only one to fly with me losing the lift and heading to the beach after about 25 minutes in light thermals. Coming out from the Mountain in big sink, Claudio made a low-ish save almost directly over the beach at about 150 meters. The sun came out, thermals started pumping and he and eventually climbed to the limit and flew all over the mountain for an hour and a half - Brucie McG

Malahat/VanIsle Report - Malahat was on big time. As long as you wanted, as far down the western side of Saanich inlet as you were willing to go. 4 pilots had their fill. Amir probably got skypig award, but he was flying with electric gloves. Thanks for your soaring suggestions on the weekend Jim. They were very helpful. I was able to hook some good stuff and stay up near the mountain for quite a while. When a few flakes of snow showed up, I headed for landing, and ended up ridge soaring over the abandoned cement factory at 300 meters ASL for as long as I wanted. The possibility that I might actually have to lose fingers to frostbite was the only thing that drove me to the LZ - Bruce McGuigan

March 2-3 Woodside/Eagle Ranch sunny 0% POP light and variable, north above 6000' -3.0°/1000'
(very unstable lapse rate)
Woodside/Eagle Report - first flights into Eagle Ranch on Saturday and Sunday. We removed the fence in the middle of the field (E-W direction) and removed the blackberry bushes that were in the fence running N-S. Still lots to remove, but it is much cleaner for landing. Some turbulence noted on Sunday when it got windy around 5:00 pm, but no worse than the old LZ in strong South winds.

Thanks to everyone who helped! It made the work go so much faster.

Saturday was busy at launch with 20+ PGers and 8 or so Hgers, also busy in the air as everyone worked the 5 or 6 thermals near launch. Sunday was even busier, with Ian J claiming SkyPig honours with 3.5 hrs before landing. Some interesting top landings? noted on Sunday.
