FlyBC is flying every day this week as fall arrives and it dries out

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Rain. High 25. Humidex 27. UV index 5 or moderate.
250° @ 2
-3.0°C (unstable)

300 metres
Woodside Report - heavy rains all day and we could barely see Harrison Highlands in the fog. Expect this pattern until Wednesday.

800 metres
Woodside Report - more strong outflow as the front arrives on the coast.

Neighbour Randy helped me bury the powerline to the Barn today and clean up the underground junction boxes in the driveway. The overhead wires have been a hazard for trucks delivering stuff so we moved thrm with a new feed with higher capacity.

It started spitting rain around noon, but we were finished before the rain really started after 5 pm.

Rain is forecast until Wednesday/Thursday.

Woodside Report - FlyBC was open today for students but strong outflow kept us on the ground.

But the WCSC Meeting proved a sell-out as Igor & Alex regaled us in stories and pictures from their epic XC flights this summer.

Alex did a 200 km XC flight from rainbow Mtn in Whistler on July 22nd!

Then Igor went for a 245 km XC flight from Miller Ridge hike-up site . . . three days in a row!

800 metres
Woodside Report - we had light outflow on launch at 10 am, but by 11 am we were flying with 5 students of varying experience.

Geordon is 2 flights awy from signoff and was thermalling well on his new Swift 4.

Sean logged his 25th and graduation flight, but sadly scratched too low and landed in Duncan's hayfield on his 25th flight so we have to do a few more flights and his P-2 exam soon.

The Van was full on every ride up as many were out enjoying the sunny weather but of course the weekend weather looks dismal again.

Tip of the Day: Make sure you pick up the correct wing bag, so you don't have to fly a tandem glider down solo instead of your Leaf Light Small!

800 metres
Woodside Report - we did not think it would be flyable til noon as outflow was forecasted and it was windy in Agassiz at 9 am, but we launched the first flights at 11 am into nice cycles and the air was very buoyant.

We only had Bruce and Mark flying today as students as Aaron came down with food poisoning (his own food!), and Jim twisted an ankle on landing yesterday ao he took a day off to recuperate.

Dennie was doing launch coaching and I was landing coach for the first flights and the landings are going well.

Here is Bruce setting up his downwind leg on the Atom3 L (we only use current gliders in our stdent fleet to enhance student performance quickly).

The students did four runs today and it was very smooth in the air, great for building confidence.

1000 metres
Woodside Report - FlyBC was open today for some new pilots and the parking lot was full with other pilots and visitors.

The first flights were short but by 2 pm everyone stayed up for over an hour as they did on the third round of flights!

The new students were doing well and Aaron got over an hour on his third flight thermalling like a pro and staying safely out of other pilots way.

James received his new SupAir Step glider and we very impressed by its performance. He was flying next to Geordon on the Swift 4 and climbing better at times and it is definitely fast.

In two hours of thermalling today he did not have even a tip collapse on the Step.

It floats!

Step Review from Ziad

Supair STEP EN-B size S

The Step is Supair’s new high B glider. The Step with an aspect ratio of 5.7, has a shark nose, and a refined unsheathed set on lines. With this look and construction Supair looks serious about performance gain…Lets see…

The take off is calm, and doesn’t have a tendency to overshoot, unless the pilot don’t use a little brake.

I flew the S size (70-90) from 85 to 90 all up. This test concern this size with the mentioned loadings. Other sizes ‘could’ be different and flying the S size in different loads at the beginning of the range ‘could’ differ. Just to be specific. This test is an idea . Test flying is best !

I also flew the S size with different harnesses, one GTO light M and one Delight 3 M. In strong air at higher altitude sites, the combination of GTO Light and the Step are very different from the Delight 3 /Step combination, in matter of roll movements and pilot correction when encountering strong turbulence. The GTO light allow to feel the sharp movements under the Step, and gave me slightly more workout than a Mentor 5 XS, or the Chili 4 if both flown with the GTO Light. Flying the Delight 3 M size with the Step was completely different and the Step was very auto-controlled by that harness in sudden lifts and sharp thermals. The Step felt a need to be controlled slightly more than the M5 XS. It feels slightly similar to the Chili4 S (75-95). The Rush 5, S (70-90) is calmer and tamer than the others. The Step handling and brake authority are more defined than the M5 XS which is a bit less informative and not as linear as the Step. The Rush 5 S is slightly harder, with less travel, and lesser agility. The Chili 4 S is sharper, shorter in travel than the Step with close agility. Overall the Step is an agile glider with a linear and pleasurable feel on the brakes.

Supair of course designed that harness with the Step, and i humbly recommend that you try the Step with the Delight 3 in order to feel that difference.

The Step has a moderate to light feel on the brakes without any hard point. After the 10 cm gap away from the pulleys, the Step can be steered lightly with 20 cm of brake travel for swift but mellower turning radius. Lowering the brakes at the carabiner level, will induce a corkscrew turn enabling very tight turns. This feature is not available on the M5, Rush 5, and even the agile Chili4 ! The Step has the genes of the little Leaf in terms of turning radius ! The overall pilot level over the Leaf is a step and a half !

I flew next to a Mentor 5 XS (70-90) that has the same size as the Step, and we were similarly loaded. Best way to compare and comment.

The Step climbs really well…Knowing that the M5 XS is a super climber, i cannot but confirm that the Step felt super competitive with an edge ! The ability for the Step to tighten the turning radius is an efficient way to climb in narrow cores. The Step has a very slight pitch back, sometimes un noticeable. I felt that i could be more efficient when i flew the Step at max weight ! the climb didn’t suffer at all, and i was still climbing like a spring without any pitch momentum.

Doing some glides with the same mentor 5 XS , lifted my eyebrows over my sunglasses !

The Step is a serious gliding machine, and we were both inseparable in glide at trim, at half bar, even at top speed. The Step has 13 km/h over trim taken at 1000 ASL.

The handles on the C are efficient on this 3 liner in moderate conditions. Applying half to full bar, in moving conditions, and controlling with the C handles, i was able to prevent most pitch situations.

The leading edge felt very well pressurized. It was hard to pull on the A lines to induce a collapse at trim speed. St full bar the leading edge flutters a bit , but it feels solid.

Big ears are stable. They have a moderate efficiency and they reopen quickly without any input.

Conclusion: IMHO, Supair has made their best glider till date for overall package it has to offer. Climb like a devil, glide like the top high B, handles super well…fast enough for a high B…what can i say more … If you want my opinion … A demo should be considered as your next step :-)

Cheers,

Ziad

FlyBC is hoping it stays dry at Woodside for first flights

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
20% Precip. / 0.00 mm AM Clouds/PM Sun. High near 15C. Winds light and variable.
250° @ 8
-3.0°C (unstable)

800 metres
Woodside Report - FlyBC was open today for some new pilots who spent the past two days kiting and doing ground school sessions and it paid off as they all got their first solo flight in late in the day. It was a great day for soaring as Martin N found out as he soared for an hour on the north cliffs at 800 metres.

He took a different line out to the Ranch and arrived over the valley at 1100 metres.

Meanwhile I was launching students after Bev, Colleen & Eric G flew.

It took some time to get straight lulls for the students as it was very cross from the North, but Aaron & Bruce got their first flights done on the path to paramotoring.

Thanks to the strong backs that helped install our pool liner which did weigh in at 700 pounds, as we had 6 people pulling and straining and finally got it in place with many bruised and blistered knuckles. Thanks Guys! Pool party might have to wait til Spring though?

9-22-18
FlyBC is doing a ground school course

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Rain at times heavy changing to a few showers this morning. Amount 10 to 20 mm. High 16. UV index 2 or low.
250° @ 10
-3.0°C (unstable)

500 metres
Eagle Ranch Report - we were doing ground school on Saturday for new pilots and we managed to get out in the LZ to kite a few times between big storms, lots of wet wings in the Barn but the newbies got the wings up and ran across the field several times.

9-21-18
FlyBC is closed Friday as the forecast is not looking great anywhere in BC

FlyBC is hopefully flying by 10 am here at Woodside but the forecast is not lookng great so maybe Savona is better

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Mainly cloudy with 70 percent chance of showers. High 16. UV index 4 or moderate.
250° @ 10
-3.0°C (unstable)

700 metres
Woodside Report - we decided Woodside looked flyable so we went up at 11 am and Jim & Harald both had a nice flight.

We were partway up the mountain for flight #2 when it started raining so back to the Barn for some ground school.

We are planning to fly Sunday and if you are out I am looking for a few strong backs to help install our pool liner whuch apparently weighs in at 700 pounds, but it must be less because Norm and I moved it a few feet off the pallet. It should only take 15 minutes to align it over the hole.

9-19-18
FlyBC is doing a morning ground school session and hopefully flying by 10 am

Woodside Forecast

900 metres
Woodside Report - Dennie was in charge on launch for us today managing Jim & Harald on their third day of solo flights.

They got two good flights before it got windy and sinky around 4 pm.

They spent the afternoon kiting and getting tuned up for tomorrow, as it never calmed down before sunset.

Other pilots were out geting nice flights with Norm & Martin N tied for longest flights.

9-18-18
FlyBC is doing a morning ground school session and hopefully flying by noon

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Mainly cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers this morning. High 17. UV index 4 or moderate.
250° @ 6
-3.0°C (unstable)

900 metres
Woodside Report - we had two new students start out today and they both got in a high flight after a long day of kiting with Dennie.

Jim and Harald were both kiting the Ozone Atom 3 gliders and they were looking good with forward launches and Harald seemed to prefer the reverse technique better after he perfected it.

Jim is here for Paramotor Lessons after he gets a few free flights perfected (we usually recommend 10 free flights before strapping on a motor).

While not as thermic as yesterday the air was good enough for Igor & Vlad to attempt the Raymont Challenge but they were forced to land at Harvest Market on the return leg.

900 metres
Woodside WOW Report - we had just two students today and they left very happy at the end of the day, despite only getting three flights.

James was here for flights 7-9 and Geordon is up to flights 15-17.

It was such good air today that they met the 2 hour airtime requirement to be P-2 certified in two flights!

I launched them around noon and they both got 1:30 of airtime with Geordon having to pull "big ears" after hitting some cloud suck.

As forecasted by CanadaRASP, it was leeside in the AM, followed by SW winds up about 5 kph so the thermals were good but not predictable.

James was also doing great and figure out surge control after about 15 minutes. Here are some pictures that we grabbed off the GoPro while I was flying tandem with AJ.

James was on our SupAir EONA S while we are waiting for his new SupAir Step to arrive next week.

AJ was having a great time as we thermalled up to cloudbase but as usual after 20-30 minutes the nausea kicks in on a strong day.

This was AJ just off launch.

We were heading up to launch at around 6 pm when the RCMP turned us around at 2 kms.

There was an abandoned car there that we had seen since noon and apparently someone was either deceased or on the run because they would not let us pass that point.

So the guys were denied their last flight today but they were still pretty happy with the day!

9-16-18
FlyBC is doing a morning ground school session but no flying is likely as a big rain cell hovers nearby

600 metres
Coyote Report - FlyBC headed towards Kamloops to avoid the rains.

I had Gabe, Geordon & Andrew onboard and we arrived at Savona to find the winds way too strong to even kite the Atom3 Small glider.

I checked Cache Creek and it looked lighter there so we headed to Coyote for some flying and hopefully some soaring.

The burnt out areas are now regrowing nicely and it was very green up there in desert country after all the rain.

Geordon took off first and had a nice thermalling session out over the flats.

Gabe also caught some thermic lift to the north on the Atom3.

Gabe & Geordon decided to hike back up as Andrew got ready to fly.

Andrew was advised not to hike up by Geordon who said it was not worth the hike!

At the end of the day here they got four flights each.

We then headed back through Savona and it was even windier on all the ridge tops, so we raced home to try Woodside but we arrived too late as the sun sets fast these days.

9-13-18
FlyBC is flying at Woodside hoping for some nice lift

1100 metres
Woodside Report - FlyBC was planning a noon trip up the mountain for a tandem for Tanya.

Martin, Bev, Alex, Norm, Dennie, Andrei and Tanya headed up at 1 pm as she somehow got lost in Harrison Mills?

It was breezy on top as Martin & Alex launched and got to cloudbase immediately.

I launched the Magnum 2 tandem with Tanya and we too went to the clouds in a few passes.

The clouds were small enough that you could surf the front of them without getting "whited-out".

It was not so windy in the air but it definitely was strong on launch.

We flew for about 30 minutes before a rain cloud was drifting from Cultus towards Woodside so folks were making plans to head east to Harvest, etc.

I figured the best plan for us was to land at the Ranch as Tanya had other plans later and her ride was waiting at the Ranch.

It took about 15 minutes to get out to the Maple Tree field and another 10 minutes to get through the lifty air.

The air over the Ranch was mixed up but wd had a soft landing near the yellow windsock that showed South wind.

Andrie and Dennie also landed at the Ranch as Alex went to Harvest and Martin top-landed.

It did sprinkle after we packed up but it was short-lived and the rest of the afternoon was nice til 5 pm.

We have received word that we are getting a new SupAir STEP demo in M size after Coupe Icare.

9-11-18
FlyBC is heading to Savona at 9 am

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Cloudy. Rain at times heavy beginning this morning. Amount 5 to 10 mm. High 18. UV index 1 or low.
250° @ 10
-3.0°C (unstable)

600 metres
Woodside Report - FlyBC was going to do a roadtrip to Savona leaving the Ranch at 9 am but the sky looked good so we stayed at Woodside.

The forecast changed at 7 am and it looked possible to fly til 3 pm.

Light winds and clear skies so we went up Woodside right away and Gabriel had three student flights in perfect conditions.

Bev flew too and bagged a couple of flights.

Then we took the Blackhawk 125 demo paramotor out to the field and Gabriel got his third paramotor flight but it was a bit windy so it was a short 15 minute flight with a perfect launch and landing.

Then as I started working on my Van suspension it started to rain. But a good day with four student flights despite the ugly forecast.

9-10-18
FlyBC did a roadtrip to Savona

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Cloudy. Rain at times heavy beginning this morning. Amount 5 to 10 mm. High 18. UV index 1 or low.
250° @ 10
-3.0°C (unstable)

600 metres
Woodside Report - we were on a roadtrip to Savona with Gabriel hoping for his first paramotor flight.

Meanwhile back at the Ranch it cleared up around noon enough for Bev to bag a flight, but it was short and it started raining after she landed.

But in Savona it was blue skies and light winds and Gabriel had a Toilet Bowl soaring flight to start.

I left him kiting in SW winds at the International LZ while I went to buy gas.

It was barely kiteable sso I suggested I show him our favourite Dump Site and we arrived to the same SW winds and we set him up with a Blackhawk Paramotor to kite and get used to the hook in points.

Within minutes the winds switched to almost soarable NE winds so we turned him around and he did some inflations.

He was doing so well it was time for the motor!

Gabriel did a perfect reverse launch for his first paramotor flight and was soon soaring overhead.

He had a short 10 minute flight with a perfect landing.

He did another flawless launch and was soon high in some nice thermals.

This landing was okay but he had to do a crosswind turn to avoid flying off the edge of the hill.

The drive back on Hwy 5 was scary with lots of rain and some hail near Hope.

9-9-18
FlyBC is closed as there is a lot of rain in the forecast

Woodside Forecast

Woodside Report - rained out Sunday so we did chores.

9-8-18
FlyBC is back training today at noon at Woodside but we are expecting some low cloud to be hanging around

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
A few showers ending early this morning then mainly cloudy with 40 percent chance of showers. Fog patches dissipating early this morning. High 18. UV index 5 or moderate.
250° @ 10
-3.0°C (unstable)

800 metres
Woodside Report - we did some ground school and harness fitting while the clouds hung low over launch, but magically by noon the clouds lifted as forecasted by SpotWX.

Only Gabriel here today but we got him three flights including two on the Swift 4 demo.

Bev flew after Gabriel and got some lift on the first flight but after that it was just sleddies.

Looks like rain on Sunday so maybe a roadtrip to Savona on Monday?

Some nice footage from Friday from Andrew's drone while Geordon was flying into the Ranch.

9-7-18
FlyBC is back training today at 10 am at Woodside but we are expecting some rain later in the day

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Cloudy. 60 percent chance of rain late this afternoon. High 19. UV index 4 or moderate.
250° @ 10
-3.0°C (unstable)

1000 metres
Woodside Report - Wow! What a great day with some excellent students!

We had eight students for most of the day and most got three flights before the rain rolled in.

Smooth buoyant conditions and little wind made for long flights.

The Bronco and Bev's truck were doing laps and we managed to get everyone up the mountain safely.

Even Martin N & Norm flew today working the light lift.

The students were doing perfect approaches and landings in light SE winds at the Eagle Ranch LZ. No outlanding allowed today as the Duncan's fields north of us are getting sprayed.

I did finally get the Van back from the shop today, new bushings in the torsion bar crossmember and new ball joints on the right side after only 8000 kms after the last set. Ready for student hauling as we expect a busy September.

9-6-18
FlyBC is back training today at 10 am at Woodside

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
A mix of sun and cloud. High 25. Humidex 27. UV index 6 or high.
250° @ 10
-3.0°C (unstable)

1000 metres
Woodside Report - we had a great training day with six students and lots of runs up the mountain.

Dennie was doing the launch duties and I was landing the newbies, but by 2 flights they were doing pretty good on the approaches.

Martin N went up around noon and managed to get 2 hard fought hours of light thermalling.

Geordon was test flying the Swift 4 MS and figured out how to thermal quite well for his 4th high flight.

Yesterday Gabriel lost his phone during a flight and was trying to find it with "Google Find My Phone" and the geo-location kept changing, but by 6 pm he had found a high confidence location and after his last flight, he trekked into the bush and found his phone. It survived a 500 metre fall with just some scrapes to the back. Sounds like an LG commercial in the making.

9-5-18
FlyBC is back training today at 10 am at Woodside but we are getting some outflow winds

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Cloudy with 30 percent chance of showers early this morning. Clearing near noon. High 22. UV index 6 or high.
040° @ 5
-3.0°C (unstable)

1000 metres
Woodside Report - we started our student flights after noon as there are outflow conditions in Agassiz early on, but oddly we had perfect SE kiting conditions all morning.

We had three student rounds and even Bev, Norm, Justin & Cheryl came out to fly their new harnesses.

Conditions were very "boaty" despite the smoke and inversion layer at launch elevation.

You can see how hazy it was on the first flights in this picture of John on his new SupAir EONA2.

Conditions on launch were perfect for forward or reserve inflations. The new students, Geordon & Andrew, were doing great reverse launches on their first flights today.

Owen is now up to four high flights in two days, and he likes to go last and he was rewarded with a nice glassoff flight today with lifty but smooth conditions and a flock of geese to end his day on a "high note".

The only casualty of the day was Gabriel losing his cell phone somewhere between the Highlands and the Ranch (in flight). We used "Find my Android" through Google and the last ping was in the Highlands.

Tip of the Day: Secure your phone with a lanyard or into a zippered pocket.

1000 metres
Woodside Report - we could not start kiting until after 2 pm due to strong NW outflow winds of +30 kph.

And then it calmed down nicely and the guys got to kite til 5 pm, and then they were ready for their first high flights!

John E went home early and missed the flight but he already has 6 high flights.

So it was just Gabriel and Owen who got to fly.

1000 metres
Woodside Report - FlyBC is back in business today, and it was quite busy with 4 students and four mountain flights today.

Highlight of the day: Dennie was taking Thierry's son Thomas for a tandem so he launched Thierry first and told him to wait in the thermals while Dennie launched. Cycles were bad and Dennie took about 30 minutes to get launched and meanwhile Thierry stayed aloft above launch with no guidance. And then they got to fly together.

9-2-18
FlyBC is back training today

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Sunny. Becoming a mix of sun and cloud this morning. High 21. UV index 6 or high.
240° @ 10
-3.0°C (unstable)

1000 metres
Woodside Report - we only got some early mountain flights as it got windy this afternoon.

Colleen took Augustina tandem on the Rush 4 XL and they flew until Augustina got motion sick, landing at the Ranch is strong +20 k winds.

We shut down the students after that report with the exception of Greg S who was going for his 25th flight and sign off so he flew to Harvest Market with Norm.

Lots of good kiting later in the day and even at 6 pm it was too windy to fly safely so we sent everyone home.

Belated Benny Report - apparently a large group went to Lower Benny a few days back and only Martin N, Kevin A & Mike M got away and went XC towards Woodside.

Some very experienced pilots got flushed and landed in the bailout LZ.

Martin said it was tough going as he launched first but eventually he found a good climb and was away.

Was is good piloting or the superior Ozone Gliders these guys were all flying? Mike and a Swift 4, Martin on a Swift 4 also and Kevin on an Alpina 3. I think a bit of both!

9-1-18
FlyBC is back training today, but we may not do any mountain flights as we need to get everyone tuned up on the ground

Woodside Forecast

Harrison Mills Forecast:
Cloudy. Clearing late this afternoon. High 20. UV index 4 or moderate.

-3.0°C (unstable)

1000 metres
Woodside Report - FlyBC was back in business today, and lots of students arrived to get their high flights.

Unfortunately, it got too windy in the afternoon for students after they got one great flight at noon.

Greg had an hour of thermalling and is very near his 25th flight and passed his P-2 exam today.

Great kiting conditions in the afternoon, but the experienced pilots that flew after 1 pm did not like the landing conditions, but as Norm said "you could go up everywhere".
